HOW TO USE ZINGA

STAND ALONE SYSTEM

ZINGA provides comparable protection to conventional galvanising without the need for topcoats. Although ZINGA is only available in grey (the natural colour of zinc), the significant advantage of this form of application is that the ZINGA layer can be re-coated at any point in the future with the bare minimum of preparation and without compromising the integrity of the coating (see Re-charging of ZINGA). ZINGA on its own is often used, because the structure is already on site or too big for the molten zinc baths.

For optimal protection, ZINGA should be applied in two layers of 60 or 90 μm DFT each.

AS PRIMER WITH SUITABLE TOPCOATS

Not everybody likes the colour grey and with the additional protection of a compatible topcoat the coating durability offered significantly increases. ZINGA does not even have to start actively working until the topcoat has been compromised and with no underlying corrosion creep or rust bubbling, the topcoat itself inevitably lasts longer. In a duplex system (Active + Passive), ZINGA should be applied in 1 layer of 60 to 80 μm DFT.

AS SHOP PRIMER

At a thickness of 30-40 μm, ZINGA can be used as a shop primer. The big benefit is found in the fact that the steel structures do not require re-blasting before coating if ZINGA is applied as a shop primer. The steel structure can be further coated with ZINGA to obtain a cathodic protection or with any other paint without the need for re-blasting! Zinganised steel structures can be welded and bent during assembly.

RAPAIR FOR HOT-DIP GALVANISED STRUCTURES

This is probably the most common use of ZINGA as it requires the simplest surface preparation. ZINGA's mechanism of protection is so similar to conventional galvanising that they work in complete unison, as they are merely different forms of zinc protection. Rather than replacing galvanised assets, structures can simply have their protection "re-charged" by applying ZINGA to the rough surface of the old galvanising after appropriate decontamination and removal of the salts.

The APAS2916/2 approval describes ZINGA as an organic zinc rich coating for protection of steel (durable one coat single pack), certifying that it is a suitable product for the repair of galvanised steel as described in AS/NZS 4680.

ON REBARS

ZINGA is used globally in the construction industry on steel rebars prior to assembly and immersion as it delivers increased corrosion protection without compromising pull-out strength in even the lowest quality of concretes.

Independent laboratory testing performed by multiple institutes has proven ZINGA can guarantee twice the corrosion protection compared to that of galvanised or epoxy coated rebars. Learn more about the use of Zinga on Rebars here.

As a replacement for Galvanite

With additional benefits…

Not only is ZINGA a suitable replacement for Jotun Galvanite (a zinc-rich epoxyester coating that is no longer available on the market), but it also offers a range of additional benefits, including;

  • A higher film thickness

  • A higher volume of solids

  • Quicker drying and re-coat times

  • Unlimited shelf life and pot life

  • The ability to be recoated with epoxy & polyurethane if colour is required for the final product.
